Christmas in Montrose is an annual festival that captures the joy of the holiday season and celebrates the close-knit, neighbor-helping-neighbor values that make our small town so special. A Christmas tree is given a place of honor in the center of Main Street, and the celebration officially kicks off with a tree lighting ceremony that delights kids of all ages (as the song says, from 1 to 92!).
Come and welcome the Christmas season with a pictures with Old St. Nick himself, piping hot chocolate, and horse-drawn carriage rides through our beautiful downtown. You can’t forget a trip to the chocolate shop, a stroll through the farmer's market, gift shopping and so much more. Wrap up this weekend of Christmas spirit in our hometown with the Montrose Christmas Chorale concert on Sunday afternoon.

History of Montrose
Founded in 1812, Montrose was settled by families that were immigrating to the area from the New England area. The American Revolutionary War created tension in the New England states and people were looking for a fresh start and affordable land to call home. This area has an abundance of bluestone and timber so it was a perfect place to start new. The first families started building large colonial style homes around the town's green, courthouse, churches and Main Street. Our name is a combination of "mont", the French word for “mountain” and Rose, for Dr. L R. Rose, a prominent citizen. The town, along with Susquehanna County, is best known as the location of significant Marcellus shale drilling, putting Montrose in the center of the bourgeoning natural gas industry of the 21st century.
